One of my favorite discoveries has been www.bedtimemath.org.
Their mission: "To make the nightly math problem as common as the bedtime story". I love it! Every day they post new math word problems, giving all the background information needed to solve. They then ask questions at "three levels of challenge: Wee Ones, Little Kids, and Big Kids. Again, these don’t signify rigid age ranges or grade levels, but as a rough guideline, Wee Ones are targeted for pre-school kids, Little Kids grades kindergarten through 1st or 2nd, and Big Kids grades 2nd onward. That said, they differ a little every day, so feel free to pick and choose – and to swap in your own numbers if you like. There’s no one right way."
We would read the problem to our boys and they would answer the question for their level. They would like to "challenge" themselves and try to answer the higher level(s) as well. You can sign up to receive their emails daily. You can download a monthly calendar to keep track of the daily problems solved.
These are great problems to use in the classroom as well.
Check it out and add it to your bedtime routines!!!
